Ashes, Ashes, We All Fall Down essays I buried with my own hands five of my children in a single grave. No bells. No tears. This is the end of the world. (Deaux, 1969) These are the words of Italian author Agniol di Tura, but they reflect the emotions of an entire nation in the 1300s. It was at that time that Europe was struck by the hardest blow that a plague would ever swing. The Bubonic Plague hit Europe with a ferocity that could never have been predicted. The spread of the Bubonic Plague in the fourteenth century happened quickly as a result of poor living conditions, trade routes and ignorance of the disease. The first reported case of the plague was in 543 when it hit Constantinople. (Hecker, 1992) This was a minor outbreak and there were others similar to it, but since no one knew where it came from and so few were dying from it, no one took the time to find out. But then in 1334, an epidemic struck the northeastern Chinese province of Hopei that people couldnt ignore. It killed up to 90% of the population- around 5,000,000 people. (Armstrong, 1981) This caught peoples attention, but by then it was Sadly, some of the events that aided the rapid spread of the Plague could have been avoided. In 1347, in the southern Ukraine near the Black Sea, the native people began dying of a mysterious disease. They suffered from headaches, weakness, and many staggered when they tried to walk. But most obviously, each carried a common trademark of the plague- they all began to develop large swellings of the lymph nodes in the groin and underarm areas. Fear and anger at the disease gave way to accusation. The natives of the area pointed the blame for their curse at the Italian traders who traveled in and out of their ports. Convinced that they were the reason for their suffering, the natives attacked the ports. After a week of fighting, the natives found their soldiers dying of the diseas...

Mentoring essays Lets face it, not every child is placed on this earth with a stable home. There are many problems with families today. Divorce, death of a parent, substance abuse, or even being homeless is just to name a few. Children today deal with more stress then they did years ago. Also kids have stress from their peers. They could feel unaccepted and rejected by friends and not really have a peer group to be in. So what do can they do? How can they get help? In some cases, just a friend that will listen, hang out, teach, accept, and just have fun with them can have a big impact. What are these people called? They are mentors. Mentoring is when a role model, or mentor, offers support to another person. A mentor has knowledge and experience in an area and shares it with the A mentor can do many things. They go from helping kids with homework to just hanging out. A mentor can be like a big brother or sister. A mentor is someone for a young person to look up to and rely on. For some kids this could be the only stable thing in their lives. Having a mentor or being involved in a mentoring group, can really relieve anxiety and stress in a childs life. In our community there are several mentoring The first program I came across is called W.Y.N.G.S. It stands for When Youth Need Guidance and Support. Their mission statement is Creating and Opportunity for Success. W.Y.N.G.S. is a mentor program that gives youth the chance to have a friendship with a person who is older than you. These people will take you places and teach you new things. There is also group activities that involves the whole program. The new friendship is also there to help the younger individual with guidance and decisions concerning work, education, family relationships and more. They will meet twice a month for about two hours or as much as you want. This can last for around ...

Developing Conceptual Frameworks Are a Time Wasting Activity - Essay Example The financial accounting theory functions on the basis of conceptual framework, explains the observed accounting practices and predicts the unobserved practices. The theoretical framework of accounting evolved significantly in the 20th century following the market crash in 1929 and recent financial crisis. The major accounting theories, developed in 20th century are Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH), fundamental analysis model, CAPM, positive accounting theory and critical perspective model. These theories were criticised by SATTA (Statement of Accounting Theory & Theory Acceptance) giving the reasons why these theories could not gain general acceptance. The main points of criticism were real world complexity, varying requirements of user groups, and failed interpretation of security price behaviour through EMH, costs of adopting accounting standards more than the benefits and limited capacity of users in assimilation and analysis of accounting information. Further, to understand the implications of conceptual framework example of the joint project of IASB and FASB for the convergence of their respective conceptual frameworks is discussed. ...Conceptual Framework A conceptual framework explains the key factors, variables or constructs and their presumed interrelationships either in a narrative form or graphic form (Miles & Huberman, 1999, p.18). It is primarily a model or conception of what is meant to be studied i.e. the system of assumptions, concept, beliefs, expectations and theories. Its function is to help assess the goals, develop relevant and realistic research questions, select apt methods and identify the validity threats to the conclusion. The conceptual framework also helps in justifying the research. It is like a tentative theory which may or may not be complete. In order to construct a conceptual framework of a study the sources which can be used are: experiential knowledge, existing research and theory, exploratory research and thought experiment s (Maxwell, 2005, p.33-37). The experiential knowledge is the most important and neglected source for conceptual framework and bringing it in the research is treated as bias whereas Peshkin (1988) has strongly argued that the researchers should seek subjectivity in a systematic manner rather than in retrospective manner when the data collection and analysis is complete (Peshkin, 1988, p.17). A belief is a subjective condition of knowledge. For example in order to know a proposition ‘P’, one has to believe ‘P’ (Hospers, 1997, p.40).
